Fatigue and loss of energy following a bereavement: why it happens and what it really means

One of the most common experiences following a significant loss is a deep, persistent feeling of tiredness.

It is not simply a case of ‘feeling a bit down’ or having slept poorly: many people describe a real loss of energy, as if their body were slowed down, weighed down, drained.

Even simple activities – getting out of bed, concentrating on a conversation, carrying out daily tasks – can require an unexpected amount of effort. This can cause concern: “Why do I feel so tired?”, “Is this normal?”, “Am I becoming depressed?”

Fatigue during bereavement is a real, widespread phenomenon deeply rooted in both the psychological processes and the neurobiological mechanisms of grief. Understanding it is essential to avoid misinterpretations and to support those experiencing it more effectively.

 

Fatigue during bereavement: a normal but poorly understood experience

In common parlance, grief is associated primarily with sadness, crying and nostalgia. Far less is said about the physical and mental exhaustion that accompanies it.

Yet, among the most well-documented physical symptoms of the grieving process are precisely:

  • persistent fatigue
  • difficulty concentrating

  • a sense of ‘emptiness’

From a clinical perspective, these elements are not incidental, but central. Grief is a multidimensional experience, simultaneously involving:

Expecting to function as before increases feelings of failure and drains further resources.

3. Introduce micro-activities

  • introducing light activities
  • encouraging a minimum of continuity

4. Focus on physiological regulation

Sleep, diet and exercise have a direct impact on available energy. Even small adjustments can make a difference.

Paradoxically, trying to ‘get over the grief’ too quickly can prolong the fatigue. Fatigue tends to lessen as the integration process progresses.

 

Fatigue and the transformation of the bond

  • integrate the meaning of the loss
  • redefining one’s way of being in the world

  • the presence of the person who has been lost is integrated in a different way

This is not a return to the previous situation, but a new configuration.

 

Fatigue following bereavement is a complex response, involving the mind, body and relational system.

It is not a sign of weakness, nor necessarily an indicator of illness. It is often a reflection of a profound process of adaptation, in which the brain, body and mind are trying to reorganise what has been thrown into question by the loss.

Understanding this allows you to:

  • reduce anxiety
  • avoid distorted interpretations
  • accompany the process with greater realism

Over time, for many people, energy does not return suddenly, but gradually, along with the possibility of living one’s life differently than before.
